Originally from Los Angeles, Erik Castro began his career as a photographer freelancing
in Seattle during the late 1990s working for publications such as The Seattle Weekly and Washington Law & Politics.
Castro completed internships at both the Corpus Christi Caller-Times and the Orlando
Sentinel before earning a bachelor’s degree in journalism with high honors at The
University of Texas at Austin in 2006.
In 2005, Castro received a Hearst Award for his photo essay on a prison rehabilitation
program and in November 2009 won a National Press Photographers Association award
for his multimedia piece on a blind violinist. In 2009, Castro's Obama election coverage
was part of The New York Times online photo collection Documenting the Decade.
Erik Castro is based in Santa Rosa, California.
